The Mint Julep is a classic Southern cocktail. Its roots are planted in its Kentucky Derby history and the Mint Julep has been the traditional cocktail at Churchill Downs for over a century. Of course, when you say “Kentucky,” you also say “bourbon” and this cocktail packs a bourbon punch, simmered down with some mint and sweetness. If you have never had a Mint Julep, you should. Give my take on this classic cocktail a try and stir up a Mint Julep.
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- ½ package of Mint leaves
- 1 ounce of mint simple syrup
- 2 ounces of good bourbon
- 3 mint leaves and a sprig
- Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a simmer until the sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from the heat and add in the mint leaves. Cover and let seep for 10 minutes. Strain and chill.
- In a shaker, combine Mint simple syrup, bourbon, 3 mint leaves and ice. Shake vigorously. Pour contents into an old fashioned glass or a Silver Mint Julep cup and add more ice, garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy!
